Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

Musculoskeletal inflammatory diseases are common in children. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for long-term outcomes. Despite the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosing these conditions, child-specific MRI tools are lacking.

This thesis seeks to improve the management of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO). The study involved 75 children with CNO, 60 with JIA and 196 healthy children. Elevated inflammatory markers predicted the number of affected skeletal sites on whole-body MRI (WBMRI) in CNO patients, underscoring the utility of early MRI for guiding treatment.

In JIA, a new validated child-specific MRI scoring system proved reliable for grading active and chronic hip-changes which is crucial in clinical practice. Last but not least, WBMRI protocols for bone marrow assessment can be safely shortened in children, reducing patients’ stress and enhancing image quality, with overall care improvement.
