Film as Resistance: The Politics of Cinematic Sharing in Captain Volkonogov Escaped

Screening of Natasha Merkulova's and Aleksey Chupov's historical drama Captain Volkonogov Escaped (2021). Introduction by Peter Stuart Robinson.

On Thursday, June 1, the ENCODE network arranges a screening of Natasha Merkulova's and Aleksey Chupov's historical drama Captain Volkonogov Escaped (Russia 2021). The screening takes place at the UiT cinema room (TEO 6.222) and start at 16:00 with a short introduction by Peter Stuart Robinson (ISV). Research seminar and discussion after the screening.

Robinson's presentation after the screening interprets the place of film in political struggle, focusing on the case of Merkulova and Chupov’s Captain Volkonogov Escaped, a Russian release from 2021.  To what degree and how is film able to express and mobilise resistance to oppression?  What are the implications of such dynamics of resistance for the current international condemnation and sanctioning of Russia and Russians, especially where this takes the form of a cultural boycott?

The screening is arranged by the ENCODE network and funded by the Dept. of Social Sciences (HSL-faculty, UiT).
