Take control of your PhD journey: Literature search for technology and the natural sciences

How to search for literature in technology and the natural sciences

When doing research in the natural sciences you have to be familiar with all journals and books relevant to your field, as well as manuals and documentation on programming languages, computer models/code and data you use. When writing a research paper, you have to put your own research in a larger context by reviewing the existing literature. A thorough literature review is often expected to be a part of the PhD thesis. Knowing how to use databases will make the search and review process less time consuming, and more successful when it comes to finding all relevant literature.

The course is designed as a workshop at one of UiT’s computer rooms, where there will be a combination of database information and practical searching. To make the course as useful as possible, we will try to adapt our approach to the current PhD projects within the natural sciences at UiT. The following databases will be covered: Oria, Scopus and ISI Web of Science. In addition, we will offer individual guidance and tips for searching other, subject specific databases.
