Research Seminar: Reporting energy injustice: Indigenous land claims and the “green” shift in local news

Please join us (in person or on Teams) for a research seminar featuring Eli Skogerbø. Eli is Professor in media studies with a specialisation in political communication at the University of Oslo and currently a guest researcher at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The topic for Eli's presentation:

Reporting energy injustice: Indigenous land claims and the “green” shift in local news
Local journalism plays a consequential role in shaping public understandings of energy justice in the green transition. This talk is about a case study of media coverage of the Øyfjellet wind power conflict in Norway. The conflict concerns a wind power plant licensed by Norwegian state authorities, and its impacts on the Sámi reindeer herding district Jillen Njaarke Sijte, whose traditional pasturelands and migration routes were disrupted by the project. The study asks: How did the local newspaper Helgelendingen report the Øyfjellet conflict, and in what ways did its coverage articulate—or obscure—key dimensions of energy justice? It examines how questions of distributive, recognitional, and procedural justice were framed in local news reporting, and how Indigenous Sámi knowledge and land‑based expertise were positioned relative to industrial, legal, and economic rationales for wind power development.

Feel free to forward the invitation to others you think might have an interest in attending this presentation.
