Lecture by Ola Graff (held in Norwegian)
The drum was an essential instrument in traditional Sami culture. Many drums featured a large, square symbol in the center of the drum skin, representing the sun. Depicting the round sun as a square is intriguing. Why did they do this, especially when round sun symbols also existed? The central placement on the drum suggests that the symbol held great importance.
Missionary work and assimilation efforts led to the loss of traditional practices, including the use of the drum and the worship of the sun. This means there are few surviving sources to explain these traditions. In this lecture, Ola Graff will explore the potential significance of these symbols in the ancient Sami worldview.
The museum is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The café will open at noon, offering sun buns and hot cocoa.
