Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
Maternal health status indicates country’s socioeconomic and population health level. Reducing maternal death (MD) and morbidity is a national health priority for Georgia. This PhD project aimed to study MD, maternal morbidity, and related risk factors in Georgia based on data from the national digital health surveillance systems.
MD is rare in Georgia. Direct causes (obstetric complications of the pregnant state) are more frequent than indirect causes of death. The COVID-19 pandemic had adversely affected maternal health in Georgia since women with COVID-19 infection close to or during delivery had strong association with MD and post-delivery intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Prevalence of anemia among pregnant women was 40.6%, however, it was not associated with post-delivery ICU admission or preterm delivery. Study identified challenges for the required quality of national perinatal care services. Our findings should contribute to scale up maternal health improvement in Georgia.
