Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
There is a consistent finding that the higher the socioeconomic position (SEP), the better the health. The choice of SEP indicator is crucial in explaining these social inequalities. However, a poorly motivated use of indicators of SEP prevails in the literature. The main aim of this thesis was to explore ways of measuring SEP to identify social inequalities in health. With data from the Tromsø Study and an online survey investigating people's views on SEP, we applied different approaches to measuring SEP. The results indicated that objective indicators, such as education and income, were important determinants of health inequalities. We found that also subjective and childhood dimensions of SEP were key in identifying inequalities in health. This thesis demonstrated a need to motivate the choice of SEP indicator in studies of health inequalities. It stressed the importance of early-life factors as determinants of adult health, advocating for policies targeting childhood circumstances.
