The artistic research project 1001Nord (1001North) takes as its point of departure the ongoing celebration of Norway´s 1000 years anniversary. This celebration, ongoing towards 2030, is based on specific cultural, political and historical notions of the nation of Norway. As a contrast to this, the project 1001Nord seeks to create and explore new narratives based on a notion of ´The North´ as an alternative and a possible corrective – for example through exploring links between ´Norwegian´ and ´Sámi´, both historically and today.
The project aims at creating a critical dialogue with the official celebration of the anniversary, which is focused on Stiklestad, the Olav legacy (´Olavsarven´) and the Christianization of Norway. 1001Nord has an ambition to develop artistic statements in various forms that explores alternative narratives, alternative communities and alternative celebrations, based on – among other things – geography, power, ethnicity and gender.
As parts of the project, various seminars will be arranged to illuminate methodological challenges in this type of artistic-creative research. Together with thinkers, scholars, lecturers, commentators and artists, we wish to challenge the classic scientific ways of exploring and creating knowledge.
This time our theme is indigenous methodologies, with a wish to contribute, through art and debate, to create alternative and decolonial practices.
