Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis

In a community-based multicentre cross-sectional survey, we investigated physical health and use of healthcare services in Norwegian adults with intellectual disabilities. In a substudy we used the same physical capability tests as used in the Tromsø study.

We found that the participants in their thirties in average performed similar on physical capability tests as participants in the general population aged 80 years.

Despite many physical health conditions, most experienced their health as good. Risk of poor perceived health were higher for women, those with motor disabilities, more physical health conditions and with lack of physical activity.

The use of annual health checks was lower than recommended (57%), more for adults with a more severe degree of intellectual disability. Dental health was poor in 39% despite frequent use of dental care services.

Physical capability tests should be part of annual health checks. The quality of dental care services needs improvement.
