Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major health issue with estimated 250-300.000 cases in Europe/year. I aimed to assess if attempts to improve the quality of advanced life support (ALS) and post-resuscitation intensive care would improve outcome in Oslo.
Physician-manned ambulances (PMAs) were believed to facilitate management. Outcome categories were survival and neurological outcome. Survival was increased after ALS quality improvement initiatives. Survival was not increased for patients treated by the PMA. As further improvement in survival remained a challenge, bystander CPR and training were investigated.
Soldiers from the Norwegian Armed Forces participated. Real-life CPR experience and self-reported CPR skills were recorded, and then assessed on a manikin.
Even basic training provided high quality compressions. High quality airway management and ventilations seem to require more extensive training. Self- assessments of CPR ability correlated well to actual performance.
