Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

This dissertation addresses the pervasive issue of women’s underrepresentation in agentic high-status work and the equally important (but underexamined) issue of men’s underrepresentation in communal caring-oriented work. Results showed that men’s relatively low communal engagement is visible across the lifespan and across countries that rank from low to high on global gender equality indices. Results further suggested that gender roles in the communal domain may be a barrier to women’s entry into agentic roles. The availability of generous and egalitarian parental leave policies did not explain cross-national differences in men’s intentions to take parental leave in the future. Exposure to counterstereotypical role models (e.g., women in leadership positions or men in care work) was sometimes (but not always) related to counterstereotypical behavior and aspirations in girls and women and boys and men. These data have implications for interventions that aim to address gender segregation in paid and unpaid work.
