Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis
Chronic pain is a major health problem afflicting about one third of the population. Poor sleep, depression and ruminative thinking are known to contribute to chronic pain. Less is known about seasonal variation in pain symptoms at high latitudes.
We examined pain and sleep in patients and matched healthy persons in Tromsø, using questionnaires and sleep recording devices, during summer and winter.
Patients with chronic pain had relatively poorer sleep than healthy persons. Symptoms of depression strongly influenced self-rated sleep, and ruminative thinking was related to reduced restorative deep sleep. Daytime pain and reduced sleep quality were mutually related on a day-to-day basis. Finally, patients reported more pain and had later sleep timing in summer compared to winter, but no seasonal variation in symptoms of depression or sleep quality.
The study underscores the importance of biopsychosocial perspectives in pain care and calls for further studies of seasonality in pain.
