Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:
In selected patients with elevated levels of cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein), blood is circulated through filters (apheresis) for the removal of cholesterol. This study investigated how three systems for cholesterol removal affect the immune system differently.

Some of these systems separate the different parts of the blood (plasma separation) before the removal of cholesterol. In the contact between blood and the filter, the immune system is activated, and a biocompatibility reaction started. The filters also alter concentrations of other blood proteins. This can be beneficial and this treatment option can potentially be used for the treatment of other diseases.

The main implications of the study are that thorough testing should be performed both in the laboratory and in patients before such systems are used in the treatment of diseases other than what they were designed for.
