ADLab Webinar: Challenging Perceptions of Old Age and Art (Ingrid Tranum Velásquez, Copenhagen)

Abstract

Based on the experiences from the Happy End project, I will talk about the choreographic meeting between professional dancers and nursing home residents. In the project nursing home residents from all over the nordic countries collaborated with professional dancers in a choreographic investigation of old age. I will talk about the artistic value and necessity of this meeting and reflect on how this practice challenge and reveal the mental structures around our perception of both old age and art. I will share some of the experiences of working with elder people, including residents with dementia, in an artistic context. And I will dream of how this aesthetic meeting with the old body could be a more integrated practice in both the art world and the daily routines of the nursing homes.

Bio

Ingrid Tranum Velásquez is a choreographer, dancer and auteur. Educated originally form London Contemporary Dance School, she has now develop an artistic practice based on documentary choreographic art. She is the founder and artistic director of NextDoor Project and is in her practice focused on developing nomadic and rhizomatic formats, that facilitates unexpected meetings in the local environment where they unfold. Ingrid is a choreographer who insists on an investigatory approach to her practice and who constantly seeks to place choreography as a meaningful practice in our daily lifes. Ingrid has been awarded the Danish Arts Councils working grant several times and her works has received many recognitions among others nomination of the danish performing arts award.

The talk will be followed by a panel discussion with three researchers from the Artful Dementia Research Lab:

Rikke Gürgens Gjærum: Professor in applied theater, developing innovative research designs in health & cultural settings related to investigating the meaning of aesthetic experiences in people’s everyday life. 

Tiia Grøn, M.A in visual anthropologist, works with educational film at Uit Arctic University of Norway and co-created the Artful Dementia film (submitted to Nordic Journal of Arts & Research) together with Lilli Mittner
