About the book:

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover grew up preparing for the End of Days. She had no school records because she never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father did not believe in doctors or hospitals. According to the state and federal government, she did not exist. At sixteen Tara decided to educate herself. Her struggle for knowledge would take her far from her Idaho mountains, across oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far. If there was still a way home.

EDUCATED is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes with the severing of the closest of ties. From her singular experience Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective of seeing one's life through new eyes, and the will to change it.

About the CPS Book Club:

Q: What is it?

A:          It's a chance for the UiT community to enjoy reading and discussing a common book together. Because the club is run by the Center for Peace Studies, all chosen books will relate to some aspect of peace, war, or conflict. The chosen book is not meant to be academic in nature; it can be a work of fiction, a memoir, poetry - whatever the members decide upon!

Q: When does it measure?

A:          Three times a year - once during the spring semester, once during the summer, and once during the fall semester. Specific dates are determined by the facilitator.

Q: Who can participate?

A:          Any member of the UiT community - students, staff, faculty, auxiliary staff… anyone with and affiliation to UiT is welcome!

Q: In which language will the discussions be held?

A:          Members are welcome to read the book in the language of their choice. However, for the purpose of including the greatest possible number of discussants, all club gatherings will take place in English.

Q: How much does it cost?

A:          Only the price of the book.
