“Periodontal health in Troms County, Northern Norway. Descriptive, subject level and site-specific analyses”
Kort populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
Half of adults in Troms County have periodontitis, and 1 out of 10 have severe forms of the disease. Findings are based on data from a cross-sectional study of 1,986 adults.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the supportive tissues of the teeth. With little information about periodontitis in Norway, the study aimed to estimate the prevalence of periodontitis in Troms County and to identify characteristics of persons with the disease.
We found that the presence of periodontitis increased markedly with age and was more common among men. Smoking increased the risk of periodontitis and masked early signs of disease. Use of dental services was mainly related to how people view their own resources, where dental anxiety and difficulty accessing dental services was related to less use. Those with regular dental visits did not have less periodontitis. The high burden of periodontitis, especially among older persons elevates the importance of early diagnosis and preventive actions.
