Arctic Council at Twenty: Norway and the future of the Arctic Council

The second seminar on the Arctic Council at twenty will gather the leading scholars, who have extensively reflected on various aspects of the forum’s performance as well as officials directly involved in the Council’s work. The speakers will discuss the possible directions of Arctic Council’s evolution, roles the Arctic Council can play effectively in regional cooperation and how individual member states, and especially Norway, may further contribute to the performance of these roles. The seminar will consist of four presentations and a panel discussion.

This year marks the twenty years since the establishment of the Arctic Council. Over this time, the Council has developed into the most important arena for intergovernmental cooperation in the Arctic and plays a key role in generating knowledge about the situation in the North. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Arctic Council, UiT in cooperation with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will organise a series of mini-seminars that are devised to provide a platform for discussing Norwegian performance with the involvement of government officials, researchers, students and all interested parties.

Norway is a leading Arctic Council member state, but its actual activity and daily work is little known to the wider public. Two of crucial Arctic Council organs are situated in Norway: the Arctic Council Secretariat in Tromsø and Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) Secretariat in Oslo. This seminar series aims, therefore, not only to reflect on the Arctic Council’s present and future functioning, but will focus on the Norwegian involvement in the Council’s activities.
