Velkommen til vårens siste samtale på Skarven!

What is dignity?

Over the last 70 years human dignity has gained prominence in politics, philosophy, and ordinary thought. Dignity is the ground on which human rights are founded and is supposed to be the basis for freedom, justice and peace in the world.

But what is human dignity? And what does it mean to us today?

Is it a value, and if so, what kind of value? Is it a property that specific beings possess or that can be ascribed to them? If so, what kind of property is human dignity?

Since the philosopher Immanuel Kant is widely seen as one of the most influential thinkers shaping and informing our understanding of dignity, the following text passages from his work can serve as a starting point for our discussion.

Kant on dignity

Excerpt on dignity from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
