In this first lecture, she takes up some of the challenges and opportunities posed by new digital technologies for theories and methods of the Humanities.
Avoiding apocalyptic as well as utopian stances, this lecture will assess the capabilities and limitations of text analytic algorithms in the digital humanities. At issue are the roles of description and interpretation in digital humanities work. Algorithms discussed will include word frequency programs, speech attribution studies, topic cluster modeling, and language learning programs. An approach will be suggested that sees cognition as an attribute of technical systems as well as human and animal brains, and a list of characteristics indicative of cognition will be presented.
