Fish Biodiversity
Fish, with almost 30000 species, are the most species-rich and diverse group amongst the vertebrates. They live in waters with temperature from below zero to over 40 C, and from the surface down to hadal depths below 5000m.
Through a short series of introductory lectures participants will be introduced to the major groups of fishes; their characteristics, distributions and economic importance.
Lectures will then be followed up by laboratory sessions that will include both demonstrations and ’hands-on’ activities performed by participants; demonstrations of the major fish groups to illustrate fish diversity, instruction in the use of keys for fish identification, and examination of selected fish species to illustrate ’form-and-function’ as related to adaptations to different ’life-styles’.
2 consecutive days (6-8 hours each day); to be held at BFE building (lecture theatre/seminar room and teaching lab). If adopted as a longer-term project, expansion to include additional activities could be envisaged (e.g. visits and guided tours of Polaria).
Registration: the schedule is flexible, but we need to get your registration long in advance. For example if you plan the course for spring, please contact us during the fall term.
