Scholars at Risk - UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT The Arctic University og Norway is member of the Scholars at Risk-nettork (SAR).

The objective of SAR is to strengthen basic human rights and academic freedom for researchers and other members of the global academic community.

The SAR headquarter is in New York. SAR Norway is a forum where the Norwegian member institutions may discuss efforts and activities.

The main SAR activity is to offer a free environment for researchers and intellectuals who are threatened in their home countries by offering intermediate academic positions. Here the researchers may continue their work and contribute to research, education and other activities at the host institutions.

Further, SAR contributes information, speaker series, campaigns for jailed researchers and carry out research on academic freedom.

UiT will work for the SAR objective throught the following activities:

  • Establish a UiT-SAR committee
  • Establish a UiT-SAR fellowship
  • Annual reporting to the UiT Board and an annual lecture
  • A secretariat, at AFU

The UiT-SAR committee has the following members:

  • Nalân Koç, Research Director, Norwegian Polar Institute
  • Anne-Marit Pettersen, Student, Chair of SAIH Tromsø
  • Kenneth Ruud, Prorector of research, UiT (Chair)
