Barents summer school 2014

Panel debate

Panel debate on Human Health and Environmental Challenges in the North with a focus on the Norwegian Russian border Area.

In order to make the Summer School relevant to the place we are and the actual challenges and opportunities people face here we have invited a number of people to a panel debate on Thursday at 1300. The students will participate with questions and opinions from their standpoint.

Some key elements in the debate will be:

  • Human health challenges in this area
  • Food security issues and the use of local resources
  • Local industries as a source of contamination or a source of income
  • Climate change issues
  • Increased industrial activity and migration
  • Community concerns

- Cecilie Hansen, Mayor Kirkenes

- Gunnar Reinholdtsen, Norwegian Society for Conservation of Nature (Naturvernforbundet)  

- Tuuli Ojala, Climate, Environment and Hot Spot Adviser, International Barents Secretariate
