Research Interests/Activities in the Winter project:

In general in my research, I am interested in exploring questions related to aspects of globalization, social and cultural identity and place, media, power, and culture, as well as gender. For this project in particular, the focus is the Finnmarksløpet, as well as the Iditarod of Alaska. Culture and nature-based economic development are important areas for research and education and business development in Finnmark. In light of this, I am interested in meanings and effects associated with events such as Finnmarksløpet and the Iditarod of Alaska. I will study Finnmarksløpet more closely;  I want to explore representation and politics associated with Finnmarksløpet in particular, and guiding questions could be how the race is represented in media, marketing and public discourses, in what way do it relates to local culture, nature values, Sami culture and values, how the public and check-point/along-the-trail communities perceive and relate to (representations of) the race, and how the race functions in terms of regional identity building processes. Finally, I am interested in addressing the communication associated with both races in light of concepts such as romanticization and exoticization.
