Research Interests/Activities in the Winter project:

As Professor of Tourism & Events Marketing at the University of Surrey’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and Adjunct Professor at the University of Tromsø, I teach and research destination management, tourism and events marketing and tourism as a social science and lead the University of Surrey’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management marketing research cluster. My research critically explores the interconnections between tourism, places and identities, embracing issues of citizenship and social justice and I have published 110 books, research articles and book chapters in these areas of tourism inquiry. My research has also found resonance with place marketers and other stakeholder groups and I have completed over 20 consultancy projects for national and international public, private and voluntary organisations.

I am working in WP4 (Northern Lights Tourism: Tourism performances and symbolic meanings), where I am currently co-writing a paper ’Hunting the Northern Lights’ with Dr Bente Heimtun (University of Tromsø and Professor Annette Pritchard (Cardiff Metropolitan University) and WP 2 (Finnmarkslopet and the Iditarod of Alaska: Event tourism). I also developed the Cardiff Metropolitan University work package on masculinising events tourism in conjunction with Professor Annette Pritchard and Dr Dewi Jaimangel-Jones.
