Research Interests/Activities in the Winter Project:

My ideas are related to WP1: Winter Tourism Activities: Soft and Hard Adventures (key question 1 & 2). I think it is important and interesting to isolate an activity/product that may be compared across cultural and geographical distances/differences. One such activity is backcountry skiing, which is experiencing a growth in volume, both in terms of leisure and as a touristic product, in northern Norway.

By designing a study that addresses these issues (that are comparable) by different means of data collection – we are able to answer some of the research questions that this project is aiming at:

  • How is this activity(ies) presented in different media (news, television, social media/blogs etc.)?
    • Due to a growing number of fatal accidents the last seasons, this activity is given a lot of attention in Norwegian media.
    • How do tourism companies present themselves in different settings; their particular products, and the company profile?
      • Views/focus of nature, wilderness, range of activities etc.
      • How do tour companies package and produce tours to different clients/customers groups (age, gender, prior experience etc.) given the boundaries/restraints of this activity?
      • How do the production of tours by the same companies meet the expectations of tourists with respect to the possible trade-offs between adventure and risk-taking?
      • How do companies deal with safety and accidents (both minor and major) in their planning and operations?
      • How do accidents affect tourist’s view of destinations and companies in northern Norway?
