Investigating the issue of spray icing in fish farms

Sea spray icing on fish farms can damage the nets and the structure of the cages. Pretension of icing, and implementing de-icing techniques are costly and time-consuming. Larger amount of ice on the structure can lead to the capsize of the cage with huge financial and environmental consequences.
As a part of SPRICE project, we will be working on formulating the sea spray flux generation as a function of atmospheric and oceanographic parameters at the fish farm location. This will be achieved by close collaboration with our project partner Gratanglaks. We install a weather station on the feeding barge and use other equipment for collecting the spray and measuring the wave height. The empirical spray flux formulation will be employed in our currently operationalised vessel icing model "MINCOG", with due considerations and modifications.
