Popular Science Summary of PhD Thesis

This doctoral thesis examines the mismatch between the dynamic nature of the ocean and the largely static systems used to govern and protect it. Marine species move, currents shift, sea ice advances and retreats, and climate change is making many of these processes faster and less predictable. The thesis asks how well existing ocean governance, particularly marine protected areas and the law of the sea, can respond to such ecological change. It also develops a framework for more dynamic forms of area-based management, in which boundaries or management measures can adapt as environmental conditions change. Overall, the thesis argues that protecting a changing ocean requires governance systems that are better able to respond to movement, variability, and uncertainty.
