Debattmøte om Grønlands fremtid / Debate on the future of Greenland

Internasjonalt Seminar er et informasjons- og debattforum i Tromsø, som gjennom foredrag og paneldiskusjoner tar opp nord/sør-problematikk, miljø/klima, fattigdom/utvikling og krig/fred som sentrale tema.

Torsdag 16. april kl. 19:00-21:00, på Tromsø bibliotek og byarkiv, holdes det et debattmøte i Internasjonalt Seminar.

Tema for møtet:

Hvem eier Grønland? Og hvorfor er det ikke til salgs?

Grønlands fremtid og juridiske status er for tiden en av faktorene som bidrar til en økende politisk splittelse mellom Europa og USA. Årsaken ligger i USAs president Donald Trumps ambisjon om å kjøpe Grønland, angivelig for å sikre nasjonal og internasjonal sikkerhet. Videre har president Trump stilt spørsmål ved Danmarks suverenitet over Grønland og uttrykt et ønske i sin tale på Davos-forumet i 2026 om at USA skal få eierskap over Grønland.

Dette seminaret samler eksperter i folkerett fra UiT for å diskutere aktuelle spørsmål knyttet til Grønlands status, nemlig: Hvorfor er Grønland en del av den danske staten? Kan Danmark selge eller overføre Grønland til USA? Hvorfor hviler beslutningen om Grønlands fremtid på dets urfolk? Og hvilke konsekvenser kan USAs krav på Grønland ha for global sikkerhet?

Foredragsholdere:

Professor Sondre Torp Helmersen, Forskningsgruppen for menneskerettigheter og folkerett, Det juridiske fakultet, UiT. Professor Helmersen spesialiserer seg i folkerett. Han er forfatter av Folkerett i et nøtteskall (2018) og Folkerett (2025), lærebøker som brukes i folkerettskurs ved flere universiteter i Norge.
Dr. Apostolos Tsiouvalas, Forsker ved Norsk senter for havrett, Det juridiske fakultet, UiT, og Senior Fellow ved The Arctic Institute. Dr. Tsiouvalas spesialiserer seg blant annet på urfolks rettigheter i Arktis og har gjennomført empirisk juridisk forskning på Grønland.
Professor Magne Frostad, Prodekan for forskning, Det juridiske fakultet, UiT. Professor Frostads forskning fokuserer på konstitusjonell rett og folkerett. Han spesialiserer seg på folkerettslige regler om bruk av væpnet makt.

Førsteamanuensis Gaiane Nuridzhanian, Leder av Forskningsgruppen for menneskerettigheter og folkerett, Det juridiske fakultet, UiT.

Seminaret er organisert av Forskningsgruppen for menneskerettigheter og folkerett ved Universitetet i Tromsø (UiT).

Etter innledningene blir det spørsmål og åpen debatt.

Internasjonalt seminar har et program med 25-30 åpne møter i året.

Seminaret støttes av Tromsø kommune og koordineres av FN-sambandet Nord og Seksjon for internasjonalt samarbeid (SIS) ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet.

I tillegg støttes seminaret av Tromsøs humanitære organisasjoner, solidaritets- organisasjoner og studentorganisasjoner.

International Seminar is an information and debate forum in Tromsø, which addresses key topics such as North/South issues, environment/climate, poverty/development, and war/peace through lectures and panel discussions.

On Thursday, 16 April, from 19:00 to 21:00, a debate meeting will be held at Tromsø Library and City Archives as part of the International Seminar.

Who owns Greenland? And why isn’t it for sale?

The future and legal status of Greenland is currently one of the factors contributing to a growing political divide between Europe and the United States. The reason lies in US President Donald Trump’s ambition to acquire Greenland, allegedly to ensure domestic and international security. Furthermore, President Trump has questioned Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, expressing in his 2026 Davos Forum speech a desire for the United States to gain ownership of Greenland.

This seminar brings together international law experts from UiT to discuss topical issues related to the status of Greenland, namely: Why is Greenland part of the Danish state? Can Denmark sell or transfer Greenland to the United States? Why does the decision regarding Greenland’s future rest with its indigenous people? And what consequences might the United States’ claims to Greenland have for global security?

Speakers:

Professor Sondre Torp Helmersen, Research Group for Human Rights and International Law, Faculty of Law, UiT. Professor Helmersen specialises in international law. He is the author of Folkerett i et nøtteskall (2018) and Folkerett (2025), textbooks used in international law courses at various universities in Norway.
Dr Apostolos Tsiouvalas, Researcher at the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea, Faculty of Law, UiT, and Senior Fellow at The Arctic Institute. Dr Tsiouvalas specialises, among other legal fields, in indigenous rights in the Arctic and has conducted empirical legal research in Greenland.
Professor Magne Frostad, Vice-Dean for Research, Faculty of Law, UiT. Professor Frostad’s research focuses on constitutional and international law. He specialises in international law rules concerning the use of armed force.

Associate Professor Gaiane Nuridzhanian, Leader of the Research Group for Human Rights and International Law, Faculty of Law, UiT.

The seminar is organised by the Research Group for Human Rights and International Law at the University of Tromsø (UiT).

Following the presentations, there will be an open Q&A session and debate.

International Seminar organises 25–30 open meetings annually. The seminar is supported by Tromsø Municipality and coordinated by the United Nations Association of Norway (North) and the Section for International Cooperation (SIS) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

In addition, the seminar is supported by Tromsø's humanitarian organisations, solidarity organisations, and student organisations.
