Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen
Attending to Vizenor’s survivance, this project unpacks a Chinese medical journal found in my mother’s drawer, tracing human-plant relations that constitute homeland and nationhood. If a weed is a plant that does not belong, the more-than-weed designates belonging. In approaching survivance of intergenerational ethnobotanical knowledge, I ask: how may attending to medicinal plants help cultivate preparedness to collectively survive crises of a planetary scale? What insights can the struggle to survive offer in attending to the urgency of intergenerational botanical knowledge? Moreover, how can these botanical sensibilities guide us in discerning when to redefine and when to uphold the boundaries of what we consider ‘home’? Beginning with the body as the smallest unit of home, I expand on belonging through medicinal herbs from body, to home, homeland, nationhood and finally, Earth. This approach offers reflections on more-than-human existential turbulence in the context of our collective home, the planet, in the Anthropocene.
