Fakta
Why did you apply to study for the executive master’s in Ocean Leadership at UiT?
To broaden my horizon in a field I had already extensive experience from. Coming from security and defense, I wanted to learn more about other industries, conflicting interests and future possibilities.
Where did you work and which position did you hold when you started the program?
Worked in the armed forces, and transitioned into the maritime energy sector during the program.
How has the Ocean Leadership program influenced your career?
Gained a lot of new insights, broadened my network and especially a deeper knowledge of complex systems and how they interact.
What specific skills or knowledge from the program have you found most valuable in your professional life?
Systems thinking, seeking possibilities in emerging technologies, regulations and understanding leverage-points.
Can you share an example of how the program's focus on leadership and sustainability has impacted your decision-making or leadership style?
I established my own company based on this idea. How to build resilient systems, even though new regulatory shifts might turn competition into unlevelled playing grounds. Keeping the smaller actors in systems, making sustainable models where expertise is shared for more sustainable practices.
Were there any particular courses, projects, or collaborations during the program that stood out as especially impactful?
Group work was especially meaningful. Steep learning-curve for all, where we had to find common ground, establish norms and share workload based on everyone’s abilities and experience.
Looking back, how has being part of this program shaped your perspective?
Understand the ocean systems much less narrow and focused. I see my own field of expertise much more in coexistence with the broader whole.
What advice would you give prospective students considering whether or not to apply to the Ocean Leadership program?
Go for it. Be open-minded. One day and one task at the time. Interact with your peers, ask for advice and share from your personal experience.
