NORWEGIAN:

Internasjonalt Seminar er et informasjons- og debattforum i Tromsø, som gjennom foredrag og paneldiskusjoner tar opp nord/sør-problematikk, miljø/klima, fattigdom/utvikling og krig/fred som sentrale tema.

Torsdag 8. februar kl. 19.00-21.00, på Tromsø bibliotek holdes det et nytt møte i Internasjonalt Seminar.

Tema for arrangementet er krigen i Gaza, som er et nytt kapittel i en langvarig konflikt mellom Israel og Palestina.

Den har vart siden 7. oktober 2023, etter Hamas angrep lokalsamfunn i Israel, i grenseområdene rundt Gaza, der over 1000 sivile ble drept og 240 ble tatt som gisler av Hamas.

Israel har siden svart med omfattende angrep mot Hamas som har ført til tap av titusenvis av liv i sivilbefolkningen på Gaza.

Mens antallet sivile drepte i Gaza øker gjenspeiles dette i verdensopinionens respons. Etter åtte tiår med krig, okkupasjon og etablering av ulovlige bosettinger går mennesker igjen over hele verden ut i gatene for å kreve respekt for menneskeverd og rettferdighet.

Til tross for de mange grusomme handlingene vi har vært vitne til i de siste månedene skal det kommende seminaret ta utgangspunkt i om finnes muligheter for at 2024 kan bli et positivt vendepunkt.

Hvordan kan vi bygge fred, rettferdighet og trygge stater for både palestinere og israelere?

Dette er spørsmål vi skal ta opp på neste seminarmøte:

• Hva kan historien fortelle oss om bakenforliggende årsakene til de mislykkede fredsforsøkene, og hva kan vi lære av fortiden?
• Hvilke betingelser må være oppfylt for at en tostatsløsning skal være reelt et alternativ?
• Hvilken rolle kan det internasjonale samfunnet og diplomati, inkludert Norge, spille?

PANELDELTAKERE: 

Nadim Khoury

Palestinsk statsviter og filosof og førsteamanuensis i internasjonal politikk ved Universitetet i Lillehammer. Khoury har forsket på konflikten i Midtøsten i mange år, med fokus på identitet og kollektivt minne på begge sider. Han er opptatt av hvordan en forståelse av den andre partens lidelse kan bidra til å legge grunnlaget for en varig og rettferdig fred.

Bahaa Eleyan

Masterstudent i fred- og konflikttransformasjon ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet. Han er også kulturell prosjektkoordinator og kurator fra Gaza.

Arne Overrein

Filosof og forfatter med særlig interesse for internasjonal politikk og internasjonal rett.

Inga Bårdsen Tøllefsen

Leder for Tromsø Palestinakomité

Han er doktor i filosofi og førsteamanuensis ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet, Institutt for samfunnsvitenskap.

Internasjonalt seminar har et program med 25-30 åpne møter i året.

Seminaret støttes av Tromsø kommune og koordineres av FN-sambandet Nord og Seksjon for internasjonalt samarbeid (SIS) ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet.

I tillegg støttes seminaret av Tromsøs humanitære organisasjoner, solidaritets- organisasjoner og studentorganisasjoner.

ENGLISH:

The International Seminar is a forum for political debate in Tromsø, that addresses issues of the North/South divide, environment/climate, poverty/development, and war/peace as central themes through lectures and panel discussions.

On Thursday, February 8, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the Tromsø Library, a new meeting of the International Seminar will be held.

The topic of the seminar is the war in Gaza, which is a new chapter in a long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

It has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, following Hamas' attacks on local communities in Israel, in the border areas around Gaza, where over 1000 civilians were killed and 240 were taken hostage by Hamas.

Israel has since responded with extensive attacks against Hamas, which have led to the loss of tens of thousands of lives in the civilian population of Gaza.

As the number of civilian casualties in Gaza increases, this is reflected in the response of world opinion. After eight decades of war, occupation, and the establishment of illegal settlements, people around the world are once again taking to the streets to demand respect for human dignity and justice.

Despite the many atrocities we have vitnessed in recent months, the upcoming seminar will explore whether there are opportunities for 2024 to be a positive turning point.

How can we build peace, justice, and secure states for both Palestinians and Israelis?

These are the questions we will discuss at the next seminar:

• What can history tell us about root-causes and the failed peace attempts, and what can we learn from the past?
• Which conditions must be fulfilled for a two-state-solution to be an option?
• What role can the international community and diplomacy, including Norway, play?

PANEL PARTICIPANTS:

Nadim Khoury

Palestinian political scientist and philosopher and associate professor in international politics at the University of Lillehammer. Khoury has researched the conflict in the Middle East for many years, focusing on identity and collective memory on both sides. He is especially interested in how an understanding of the other party's suffering can help lay the foundations for a lasting and just peace.

Bahaa Eleyan

Master’s Student in peace and conflict transformation at UiT the Arctic University of Norway. He is also a cultural projects coordinator and curator from Gaza.

Arne Overrein

Philosopher and author with particular interest in international politics and International Law.

Inga Bårdsen Tøllefsen

Head of Tromsø Palestine Committee.

He is Doctor of Philosophy and associate professor at UiT The Arctic University of Norwa, Department of Social Sciences.

The International Seminar has a program with 25-30 open meetings per year.

The Seminar is supported by the Tromsø municipality and is coordinated by the UN Association North and the Section for International Cooperation (SIS) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

In addition, the seminar is supported by Tromsø's humanitarian organizations, solidarity organizations, and student organizations.
