Disputas - Tuomas Heiskanen
Master of science Tuomas Heiskanen will on june 10th at 12.15 publically defend his PhD degree in science.
Title of the PhD thesis:
"On the linkage between atmospheric circulation changes and Arctic climate change"
Abstract
During the last decades the Arctic has warmed at a rate twice that of the northern hemisphere. Global climate change may lead to circulation changes, which may lead to the extra warming of the Arctic region. Here we evaluate and propose methods for decomposing atmospheric energy transport into components based on the length-scale of the weather systems transporting the energy. These systems may affect the Arctic in different ways, energy transport by large-scale systems are shown to impact the whole Arctic strongly, whilst energy transport by small-scale systems is shown to be more important regionally. Trends in atmospheric energy transport components are already observable in the present, which suggest that they can have played a role in the rapidly increasing Arctic temperatures and mass loss from the Greenland ice-sheet.
