spring 2008 GEO-3128 Marine geohazards - 5 ECTS

Theoretical and practical subject.
The course deals with marine geological processes that can affect environmental conditions at sea, on land, and in the atmosphere. Risk analysis associated with these processes includes topics such as slope stability and submarine slides, fluids in the subsurface, earthquakes and tsunamis, coastal vulnerability, the frequency of occurrence of natural events, installations on the sea bed, fish and coral habitats, palaeoproductivity in the sea and methods for measuring pre-industrial natural pollution. Examples from these topics are further explored through practical exercises
The course aims to provide an understanding of geological hazards in the marine environment.

Lectures 20 hr and exercises 10 hr.
4-hour written examination. Course work must be approved before admission to the examination. Assessment scale: Letter grades A ¿ F. Work requirements: Obligatory exercises.
27.05.2008 - Examination date is preliminary and may be subject to change. The definitive examination date will be announced on notice boards at the faculties at the beginning of the month of May for the spring semester and the beginning of the month of November for the autumn semester.
