EPINOR Summer School 2021
The last Summer School with EPINOR will be held in Bergen October 4th - 7th 2021. Looking forward to seeing you again. Registration has closed - however there will be sent specific invitations to register to new members and also possibly alumni.
The Art of Scientific Investigation: Imagination is more important than knowledge
The topic for this EPINOR summer school in Bergen goes beyond the usual statistical and epidemiological methods. It deals with the role of intuition and creativity in science.
Where do original ideas come from?
What are ways to tackle problems that seem intractable?
How can we arrange our daily routine to encourage creativity?
How do we keep fear of failure from blocking novel ideas?
As scientists, we seldom discuss these issues, and yet the history of science is rich with examples of their importance. Einstein is credited with saying that imagination is more important than knowledge.
The following three dimensions are crucial to unique ideas. Imagination is the power to bring to mind things that are not present to our senses, Intuition is our ability to understand something instinctively, and Creativity takes the process of Imagination to another level – an original idea that has value. Creativity is applied Imagination.
A paper from a previous workshop provides a fuller discussion of our goals for this summer school course. We will also draw on the ideas of Beveridge’s classic book, The Art of Scientific Investigation, as well as more contemporary works including TED talks and YouTube videos.
Leading researchers will provide lectures together with a wide range of activities and small-group discussions to encourage your own capacity for imagination and creativity – all in the beautiful setting of the Solstrand Hotel outside Bergen.
See you at Solstrand in October!
