Quality indicators in community pharmacies

Supervisor and project leader: A/Prof. Kjell H. Halvorsen

Co-supervisors: Prof. Lars Småbrekke, Prof Timothy F. Chen (Sydney Uni)

Funding: Stiftelsen til fremme av norsk apotekfarmasi, The Norwegian Research Council

Period: 2019-2023

Health care service quality is difficult to measure, and it is challenging to develop reliable and validated quality measuring tools. Nevertheless, health politicians and researchers favor to governor the development of health care services according to quality standards. This has led to the development of quality indicators (QIs), which are well-defined, measurable factors that provide an indirect indication of health care service quality.

This project aims to develop and validate national QIs that measure overall service quality. These QIs will aid key stakeholders and healthcare personnel to develop the quality of pharmacy services further, and potentially help patients/customers to take informed decisions regarding the use of services in the future.

Space for Pharmacy-based Interventions and Consultation TimE (SPICE)

Principal investigator: Ruth Webster
IPSUM collaborator: Elin Lehnbom
Funding body: National Health and Medical Research Council

Pharmacy based services have shown a number of potential benefits for patients and health systems. Examples include optimised management of medications, reduced adverse drug events, in achieving patient therapeutic goals and improved clinical outcomes, and in the management of minor ailments and repeat dispensing in community pharmacies. Given the increasing time pressures on general practitioners due to population growth, ageing population and rise in chronic diseases community pharmacists could provide some solutions. In this study we will investigate whether or not pharmacy location or type of pharmacy impacts on workflow. Workflow analysis will be conducted using the Work Observation Method by Activity Timing (WOMBAT).
