Student mobility at UiT: Loans, grants and trust funds

Loans, grants and trust funds
As an exchange student, you have several opportunities to apply for additional financial support and grants. These grants or scholarships are awarded in addition to any funding you may receive from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. Please note that when you apply for an exchange, you will automatically be considered for all relevant grants (Erasmus+, Barents+, Nordplus and North2North). However, you may only receive one of these grants.
As some grants and trust funds have early application deadlines, you should explore the available funding options at an early stage—preferably one year before the planned start of your studies.
To qualify for support from Lånekassen (in Norwegian), you must normally be a Norwegian citizen. Foreign citizens may receive support for education in Norway if they meet certain conditions.
For most students in Norway, the Loan Fund is the main source of financial support for their studies, including periods spent on exchange. The fund provides loans to cover various expenses while studying abroad, such as travel and accommodation, and may also offer support for tuition fees where applicable.
certain conditions apply to foreign students. please contact lånekassen for inquiries regarding eligibility.
Travel support
Lånekassen also offers travel support for exchange students. You may apply for funding that covers two return journeys per academic year (70% grant and 30% loan). The amount awarded depends on the country in which you will be studying.
More information is available on the main website of Lånekassen.

Please note the following conditions:
- The language course must have a minimum duration of four weeks, with at least 15 hours of instruction per week spread over at least three days.
- Courses must normally be taken in the country where you will study, provided it is a non-English-speaking country outside the Nordic region.

Through the Erasmus+ programme, you may receive financial support for your student exchange within or outside Europe for up to 12 months per degree level. You will receive an Erasmus+ grant, which averages approximately NOK 2,500 per month.
You are not required to pay tuition fees, and you will receive your Erasmus+ grant.
Erasmus+ traineeship
Students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway may undertake an international traineeship of up to 12 months through Erasmus+.

Japanese partner universities are investing in internationalisation as never before. Many students are drawn to Japan’s high standard of education and its unique culture. You may be interested in Japan’s history, or perhaps you have become fascinated by the country through manga or computer games.
The Japanese government is investing significantly in internationalisation, and many Japanese universities have received funding through the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) to recruit international students. You are very welcome to apply!

About Nordplus in general
Nordplus Higher Education offers grants for UiT students who wish to study at universities and university colleges in the Nordic region.
A Nordplus grant enables you to undertake part of your programme of study or a traineeship in another Nordic or Baltic country. Your Nordplus exchange is an integrated part of your programme at UiT and will not prolong the duration of your studies.
Nordplus student exchanges are generally linked to academic networks. UiT participates in several Nordplus networks (see the overview of universities abroad below). If your programme is not associated with one of these networks, you may apply for a Nordplus grant through Nordplus Nordlys, which is a network open to all universities in the Nordic region.
Grant
EUR 200 per month.
Please note: This funding is provided in addition to the regular support you may receive from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund as a student at a Norwegian higher education institution. You may also be eligible for a travel grant from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund.
