Guillaume Lamarche-Gagnon

Stillingsbeskrivelse

I am an environmental microbiologist and biogeochemist, with interests in understanding the interplay between the biological, geological, and hydrological interfaces within the cryosphere. Previous work included looking at how microbial life might adapt to some extreme environments found in permafrost environments and whether these systems might be considered analogues to those found outside the Earth. More recently, I switched my attention to the recently characterised ecosystems found beneath glaciers and ice sheets and what impact might a biologically active cryosphere have on global biogeochemical cycles (e.g. via the production and release of subglacially derived greenhouse gases).

To try and better understand these remote, difficult to access environments, I work both outside and inside the lab, measuring and monitoring environmental conditions in situ, but also via more targeted and controlled experimental set-ups. Over the years, I had the chance to collaborate with scientists in a range of environments across the (sub)Arctic (Canada, Greenland, Svalbard, Iceland, Norway) and high mountain regions (Peruvian Andes and Indian Himalayas) as well as to work on samples from both poles.

At present, I am proud to have joined a new Norwegian Centre of Excellence (SFF) here at UiT: iC3 - Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate. The centre brings together experts in a variety of fields to determine what impacts changing ice sheets might have on the global carbon cycle. My role as part of iC3 focuses on the fate of carbon and nutrients around the terrestrial margins of ice sheets.

Do check out the iC3 website for more information on the exciting science we are working on, including opportunities to collaborate or come to work with me and/or other colleagues: https://site.uit.no/ic3/.
