Eva Sjøttem er instituttleder, Institutt for medisinsk biologi ved Det helsevitenskapelige fakultet. Hun er professor i molekylær cellebiologi tilknyttet forskningsgruppen "Autophagy Research Group". Hennes forskning er innen feltet basal biomedisin. Den omhandler identifisering av de molekylære mekanismer som regulerer det cellulære renoveringssystemet autofagi, med fokus på selektiviteten i denne prosessen. Dysregulering av selektiv autofagi kan bidra til utvikling av en rekke sykdommer i mennesker, som neurodegenerering, kreft, hjerte-kar sykdommer og inflammasjon, og bidrar også til aldring.

    Forskningsinteresser

    Karakterisering av molekylære mekanismer involvert i selektivitet og regulering av den intracellulære prosessen selektiv autofagi. Autofagi er en viktig intracellulær prosess som sørger for degradering av ødelagte, skadelige, overflødige og infeksiøse komponenter. Autofagi er svært viktig for at cellen skal overleve under stressende forhold som sult, virus infeksjon eller mangel på oksygen. Dysregulering av autofagi er implisert i utvikling av forskjellige sykdommer som Alzheimer, Parkinsons og kreft.
