The Mathematics of Maps
There is no such thing as an "ideal" map! Distances are always distorted. However, one can make maps of the Earth that accurately represent various properties, e.g. areas, or angles, or geodesics. In these lectures, aimed at students with a first-year calculus background, I will give a tour of some of the mathematics behind various maps, including the famous Mercator projection.
