Dr. Muhammad Virk is currently serving as Professor at the Institute of Industrial Technology (IIT) and research group leader of Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group (arcICE) at UiT- The Arctic University of Norway. He is also a professional aerospace engineer and holds the position as board member at faculty of engineering science & technology of UiT. He also holds the positions of visiting professor at various universities around the globe. He completed his master and bachelor’s degrees in Aerospace engineering, whereas he obtained his PhD (Mechanical Engineering/Computational Fluid Dynamics) degree from United Kingdom. At UiT, he has established the research activities and infrastructure related to cold climate technology, icing & renewable energy. With his experience of mechanical engineering/renewable energy/CFD and heat transfer, he is also having good understanding of the aircraft design from his Aerospace engineering background. Professor Virk has established a wide network of researchers across the globe and presently he is working with different researchers & institutes in United Kingdom, USA, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Canada, Japan, Russia, Germany, Pakistan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia & China. On International level, he has been part of a team to establish ‘Nordic Wind Energy Research Center’ in collaboration between researchers from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. He also established the foundations of Norwegian first atmospheric icing research center at UiT through his nICE research project. He has received various distinguished awards of best project and research papers, an example is the winning of EU Arctic Award in 2018 from European Union, for one of his research projects focused on wind energy in cold climate. Professor Virk is also engaged in various applied research projects co-funded by industry and various national and European funding agencies. During last 12 years, he has successfully managed and participated as principal & co-investigator in 18 international research projects funded by the European Union, Norwegian Research Council, and industry. Presently, he is the author of 150+ scientific publications (peer reviewed journal publications, conference proceedings, workshops & seminars).
