RUS-3030 Concepts and Categories: Contemporary Russian Cognitive Linguistics - 10 ECTS
Admission requirements
This course is intended for students in the Master`s Degree Programme in Russian Language and Literature, the Master's Degree Programme in Russian Studies and the Master`s Degree Programme in Language and Social Studies with integrated practical-educational training. This course may be taken as a single course by students who meet the admission requirements for the Master`s Degree Programme in Russian Language: a bachelor's degree (180 ECTS), or equivalent qualification, in Russian or Russian Studies (with specialization in Russian) with a minimum of 80 ECTS in the Russian coursework. An average grade equivalent to C or better in the Russian coursework (80 ECTS) is required. For more information, please contact the Student Advisor.

Course content
The student will acquire thorough knowledge of the topics discussed in the course, expanding on knowledge from undergraduate studies. In addition, the student is trained in working independently with linguistic problems. Required previous qualifications/ courses: A Bachelor's degree with intermediate courses (90 ECTS) in Russian.Objectives of the course
After completing the course the students should have the following knowledge and abilities:
Knowledge
The students have:
- knowledge about recent advances in Russian linguistics and a good understanding of the core ideas of cognitive linguistics.
Abilities
The students can:
- write academically: formulate research questions and hypotheses and collect and analyse data from electronic corpora
- structure a linguistic argument
- use theoretical literature in linguistic research
Teaching methods
Classes include a seminar, based on the readings and practical exercises (problem sets). Each student has to choose and present (~30 min.) one of the papers from the list. Students are also required to hand in two questions for every paper discussed in class in written form at the beginning of the class. The problem sets are small sets of data that students and professors analyze together. All students must prepare all problem sets before class. After class, the students write up their own analysis (1-2 pages), which is handed in the following week.
The course will be evaluated once every second year.
Assessment
Coursework requirements:
The following coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the final exam:
- One school test in class, and 70 % of the problem sets handed in within the weekly deadline.
Assessment method:
- A home assignment on an individually selected topic related to the syllabus. The topic should be decided in agreement with the teacher at the beginning of the semester.
Examination language(s): The home examination can be written in Norwegian, English or in Russian.
Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-sit examination is offered in the event of an F-grade. The deadline to register for re-sit examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
