Course content

Content

  • Introduction to Fundamental of Fluid Mechanics: fluid characteristics, elementary fluid dynamics, fluid kinematics, flow over immersed bodies, lift & drag and differential analysis of fluid flow.
  • Student project - Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): The students are going to investigate a given fluid flow problem using numerical simulations and to make the necessary documentation and reporting from the project.

This includes preliminary problem analysis, selection of parameters for the fluid flow model, numerical simulations, post-processing & visualization of results and reporting from project. A special focus will be on 3D-visualization techniques included/developed in the 5IT-master courses at the NUC. However, other visualization methods may also be included.

Topic for student project and report-format will be given by lecturer during the first of the course.

Objectives of the course

Learning outcomes, skills and attitudes

The main learning objective is to give the student understanding about the fundamental of Fluid Mechanics and knowledge about how basic equations for fluid flow can be derived (Bernoulli, Navier Stokes, Energy Equation), which equations can be used to solve practical problems in various flow situations. The student will know how laboratory and numerical models can describe complex flow fields, and know which problems can be computed with simplified approaches and which cases that need more knowledge.

Introduce students to modelling (numerical simulation) of an actual fluid flow problem and the appurtenant reporting from the project.
