HIS-3005 History of Indigenous Peoples: Colonisation and Revival - 10 ECTS
Admission requirements
Bachelor's degree with a specialization of at least 80 credits in history or equivalent education (ref. Admission for Master's in history). Grade requirements C in Specialization. The course is also open to students who meet the admission requirements for the master level of other humanities and social sciences.Course content
The course will deal with both theoretical and empirical aspects. The empirical focus will be on the history of colonialism from the time of conquest to the indigenous peoples political revival during the latest part of the 20-century. The course will compare the history of colonialism and revival of some indigenous societies around the world. In the last section we will use the theories and methods to analyse the emergence of indigenous peoples movement at local, national and global level.Objectives of the course
The students will obtain the following learning outcomes::
Knowledge
The students will obtain knowledge on:
- the history of indigenous peoples
- central categories and definitions within the area of indigenous people
Skills
The students will be able to:
- deal with both theoretical and empirical aspects of the history of colonialism from the time of conquest to the indigenous peoples political revival during the latest part of the 20-century
- compare the history of colonialism and revival of some indigenous societies around the world
Competence
- have the skills and competences of central theories and methods to analyse the emergence of indigenous peoples' movements at local, national and global level.
Teaching methods
To achieve the central learning targets, the course will have multiple teaching approaches; lectures, discussions, video shows and collective and individual guidance.
All courses will be evaluated once during the period of the study program. The board of the program decides which courses will be evaluated by students and teacher each year.

The exam will consist of:
Coursework: Students are expected to deliver at least one prepared seminar contribution, which must be approved before they can attend the exams.
Exam:
Students write two essays during the course, each of about 5-7 pages (c.2250 words). Essays are to be delivered within a limit of seven days. These two essays are evaluated together at the end of the course.
Grading: A-E for approved, F for not approved. In case of an F grading,retake is offered on the beginning og the following semester. Deffered examination is offered in the beginning of the following semester if the student is unable to take the final exam due to illness of other exceptiontional circumstances. Registration deadline for retake/deferred is january 15th for autum semester exsams and August 15th for spring semester exams.
