Guest lecture "The importance of protecting your brain during liver disease” by Christopher F. Rose

Hepatic encephalopathy is a major complication of liver disease. The multi-dimensional burden of hepatic encephalopathy touches patients and caregivers in medical, psychological and socio-economic terms.

Repeated episodes of severe (overt) hepatic encephalopathy can lead to permanent neurological damage and therefore identifying patients with cirrhosis who are at risk of developing an episode of overt hepatic encephalopathy remains challenging.

However, with novel neuropsychological tests (via mobile phone applications) currently available to help identify patients are risk along with new treatments, preventing the development of hepatic encephalopathy and therefore reducing the risk of developing persisting neurological complications following liver transplantation is of great clinical importance.
