From accidents investigation to autonomous navigation: Fifteen years of experience at the Norwegian Maritime Authority with Lasse Karlsen, former Technical Director

Seminar with Lasse Karlsen, former Technical Director at the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA). He will talk about his 15 years of experience at NMA: working with measures to reduce accidents on small fishing vessel; working with women-fisher associations; investigating dramatic accidents involving large numbers of fatalities; working on green shipping; managing foreign delegations visiting Norway and a large number of presentations of Norwegian innovations in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, India, Brazil, USA, Canada, and NATO; working with autonomous ships together with SINTEF, Rolls Royce, and DNVGL.

Mr. Lasse Karlsen, M.Sc. CEO NORSE ADVISORY SA, has been Technical Director in Norwegian Maritime Authority and leading 13 in-house expert groups with 96 experts. He holds a Master of Technology and a Master of Risk- and Safety management. His work focusses on innovations and new technology, such as maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS), hull materials, new green fuels (LNG, Methanol, Biofuels, Li-ion battery and Hydrogen) for energy efficiency and the benefit of reduced Green-House Gas emissions. Further, he was engaged in investigation and follow-up of major ship accidents and equipment failures in collaboration with in-house experts and the Norwegian maritime industry. He was for 11 years a delegate to the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in the International Maritime Organisation, being mostly engaged with alternative design and goal based standards (GBS). He has also been personal appointed specialist to the European Sustainable Shipping Forum - ESSF Subgroup on LNG. Karlsen represents Norwegian Maritime Authority in research and development programs like Smart Maritime Centre for Research-based Innovation and Green Coastal Shipping Programme with futuristic projects that could transform the energy efficiency and reduce emissions within costal maritime transport.
