Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years duration, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other programme for basis of admission. Application code: 9371.

Course content

Special attention will be put on the interpretation of well logs and prospect evaluation. There will be several exercises during the course.

Objectives of the course

After completing the course, the students shall... 

  • be able to do a general independent interpretation of conventional logs used in the petroleum industry
  • be able to carry out standard prospect evaluation and be able to identify the main geological and operational risk elements
  • have knowledge about the application and award processes on the Norwegian Shelf, and have knowledge of the web page of the Norwegian Petroleum Directory as a source for information
  • have knowledge about the process and requirements in connection with a drilling operation
  • have knowledge of the terminology from the petroleum industry, i.e. prospect evaluation, logging and drilling operations


Language of instruction and examination

English.

Teaching methods

Lectures combined with examples and practical training.

Assessment

5 hours written exam. Grading scale: Letter grades A-F, whereof F is fail. A re-sit exam will be arranged for students who do not pass the examination for this course.
