SVF-6013 Marine management and Innovation - 3 ECTS
Type of course
The course is designed to further educate fish business operators and EU fleet representatives in particular in the subjects of laws and regulations and value chain analysis. Secondarily the course is available to masters or PhD students studying fisheries management. This is a one-week course to be offered as a diploma certification or for University ECTS credits, depending on the participant’s educational level. The course can be taken as a single course.Admission requirements
EVU-course. Students wishing to gain ECTS credits should have bachelor - level (or higher) certification as a prerequisite from a biology, sociology, law or management program. Other students will gain a diploma certification and should have working experience from the fisheries sector.

Course content
The course primary purpose is for the dissemination of information surrounding laws and regulations and value chain analysis to fish business operators and EU fleet representatives.
The course will provide students with insights into innovative approaches to fisheries management in a series of short modules. These will be focused around laws and regulations regarding international legal frameworks of fisheries management, value chain analysis in relation to information logistics, technology for identification, labelling and information flow. Furthermore, business administration, quality and processing of captured fish and food safety knowledge is provided as well as applications with exemplar Norwegian fishing industry members. Seminars will be used throughout the course to elaborate on these topics using activities such as games and role plays.
Objectives of the course
On successful completion of the course students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge. The candidate will gain:
- An understanding of the concept of an Ecosystem Approach and how it can be applied in Fisheries Management
- An overview of the development of international fisheries governance; the tragedy of the commons and collective action problems, the call for international cooperation with main institutions and legal instruments.
- An understanding of the protocol requirements, data needs, the movement, scientific use and correct procudures surrounding data flows between fleets and administration.
- An understanding of the difference between VMS and AIS, their importance, to distinguish good and bad practice with AIS/VMS and to have an overview of international VMS regulation and its importance.
- An understanding of what MPAs are, their purpose, how they are included in international agendas, why they may or may not work and to reflect on problem areas with MPAs.
- An understanding of supply chains and value chains, logistics, material flow and information flow connectivity and the requirements in mapping of supply chains and value chains
- An understanding of traceability, how it is defined, internal traceability, chain traceability, drivers for seafood traceability, its importance and how it adds value and profitability.
Skills. The candidate will gain:
- An understanding of good group dynamics and how to give feed-back in a constructive manner
- The ability to evaluate food safety in relation to aquatic food, to identify possible hazards and to discuss how different harvesting and processing parameters will impact safety.
General competence. The candidate will gain:
- Basic knowledge regarding vessel costs and revenues, break-even analysis and investment evaluation.
- Insights into the international legal framework related to fisheries management.
- Insights of seafood quality and processing
- Insights into bioeconomic theory, common reference points, the dynamics of fisheries, different management means - their properties and use in real fisheries, applications of theoretical models in real fisheries and the shortcomings and constraints of models
Assessment
Home exam, 1 week. Grading: Pass/Fail:
• Submit a 5-page essay (1500 words) by 15.5.2020
Coursework requirements:
• Active participation in lectures and seminars.
• Obligatory reading (200 pages) before the course starts.
The standard of the essay should show master-level understanding of the subject for students gaining ECTS credit.
Students gaining diploma certification will need to show a satisfactory - level of understanding in the essay submitted.
