SVF-6013 Marine management and Innovation - 3 stp

Type of course

The course is designed to further educate fish business operators and EU fleet representatives in particular in the subjects of laws and regulations and value chain analysis. Secondarily the course is available to masters or PhD students studying fisheries management. This is a one-week course to be offered as a diploma certification or for University ECTS credits, depending on the participant’s educational level. The course can be taken as a single course.

Course contents

The course primary purpose is for the dissemination of information surrounding laws and regulations and value chain analysis to fish business operators and EU fleet representatives.

The course will provide students with insights into innovative approaches to fisheries management in a series of short modules. These will be focused around laws and regulations regarding international legal frameworks of fisheries management, value chain analysis in relation to information logistics, technology for identification, labelling and information flow. Furthermore, business administration, quality and processing of captured fish and food safety knowledge is provided as well as applications with exemplar Norwegian fishing industry members. Seminars will be used throughout the course to elaborate on these topics using activities such as games and role plays.


Application deadline

The registration deadline has been set for the 15th of November. This is an optional, one-week course that can be taken as a single course by industry members or by university students for ECTS points or diploma certification, as needed.

Admission requirements

EVU-course. Students wishing to gain ECTS credits should have bachelor - level (or higher) certification as a prerequisite from a biology, sociology, law or management program. Other students will gain a diploma certification and should have working experience from the fisheries sector.

Language of instruction

The course is taught in English and course participation will require working knowledge of English. There will however be the possibility to facilitate in Spanish or any other language.

Teaching methods

The course is taught in a series of modules by experts  from FarFish organizations. The material taught will be elaborated on in seminar activities such as role-plays or games throughout the course period and an excursion will be provided to visit a local industry organization.

Assessment

Home exam, 1 week. Grading: Pass/Fail:

• Submit a 5-page essay (1500 words) by 15.5.2020

Coursework requirements: 

• Active participation in lectures and seminars.

• Obligatory reading (200 pages) before the course starts.

The standard of the essay should show master-level understanding of the subject for students gaining ECTS credit. 

Students gaining diploma certification will need to show a satisfactory - level of understanding in the essay submitted.

The date for the exam can be changed. The final date will be announced at your faculty early in May and early in November.
