ENG-1001 English for Business and Marketing - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course is reserved for students in the Bachelor`s Degree Programme in Management, Innovation and Marketing.

Course content

The main focus in this course is to give the students skills in general and professional English to enable them to communicate well and correctly in spoken and written contexts. Some of the topics will be closely tied to the syllabus in other courses in the Bachelor programme in Management, innovation and market, for example International marketing and management, and crosscultural communication and will be used as basic material for acquisition of vocabulary, grammar exercises in addition to general development of knowledge of these issues and topics.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge and understanding:
When the students have passed the exam, they should:
- Know more correct English usage in different contexts.
- Have knowledge of different aspects related to international management, international marketing and intercultural communication
- Have knowledge of specific terminology and expressions in these fields
- Have knowledge of formal aspects of various written types of document.

Skills and proficiency:
At the end of this course, students:
- should have improved their English both in writing and in speech in a variety of communicative contexts.
- will have the experience of holding a presentation in English in front of an audience and of taking part in discussions and
meetings in English
- should be able to present and discuss the topics dealt with on the syllabus in good spoken and written English
- should be able to draw up and write certain types of formal documents in English; letters, e-mails, memos and reports.
- should have acquired more vocabulary and some specific terminology
- will have experience of translating some texts and terminology from Norwegian to English.

Language of instruction and examination

Language of instruction and examination is English.

Teaching methods

The teaching will take place during the whole term, with certain teaching free periods when students are expected to study on their own. The lessons will consist of lectures, seminars, language and grammar exercises, prepared discussions, student presentations, group work/case studies, meetings and discussions.

Total number of hours: 52

Quality assurance: The subject undergoes a post-evaluation every third year.

Assessment

Coursework requirements:
2 written assignments/exercises, 1 oral presentation (10-12 mins) and 80 % attendance. The work requirements are assessed as approved/not approved.

Assessment method:
4 hours written exam. 

Performance in the course will be assessed with the grades A-F. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-examination is offered in the event of an F-grade. The deadline to register for re-examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
