Statutes

The statutes for The Mohn Prize have been approved by the Board of UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Revision of, or amendment to the statutes must likewise be approved by the Board.

Main objective, administration, and financing

The International Mohn Prize for Outstanding Research Related to the Arctic (The Mohn Prize) is awarded for excellence in research related to the Arctic. Furthermore, the prize aims to highlight issues that are of particular relevance to the future development of the Arctic, and help put these issues on the national and international agenda.
The Mohn Prize is administered by UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) on behalf of UiT, Academia Borealis – The Academy of Science and Letters of Northern Norway (NNVA), and Tromsø Research Foundation (TFS).
Funding for The Mohn Prize is provided by TFS.

Nomination process, and awarding of the prize

Nominations for the International Mohn Prize for Outstanding Research Related to the Arctic (The Mohn Prize) can be submitted for individuals or research groups who hold a leading international position in her/his/their field, who is/are widely recognised as leader in her/his/their field, and who has/have developed groundbreaking new knowledge about the Arctic. The prize is not awarded post mortem. (The only exception being in cases where the laurate passes away after the award has been announced, but before the award ceremony.)
The nomination process is open to anyone. Nominations are confidential, and should not be made known to the nominee. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Call for nominations should be made public (preferably) one year prior to the prize ceremony.
Nomination deadline is the 31st of July.
The Mohn Prize amounts to 2 million NOK (approximately 195 000 €)
The Mohn Prize will be awarded biennially.
The Laureate is invited to give a lecture in connection with the award ceremony.
A formal dinner, in honour of the laureate, will be arranged in connection with the award ceremony.

Steering committee and Science committee

The decision on to whom the Mohn Prize will be awarded is taken by a steering committee with three representatives from UiT The Arctic University of Norway (appointed by the board of UiT), two representatives from Academia Borealis – The Academy of Science and Letters of Northern Norway (appointed by the board of Academia Borealis), and one representative from Tromsø Research Foundation (appointed by the board of the foundation). The current rector of UiT will be one of the three UiT representatives, and he/she will serve as chair of the steering committee.
The members of the steering committee are appointed for a period of 4 years, and can be reappointed for a second term. Should a member of the steering committee step down during his/her term, a new member will be appointed for the remainder of the term.
The steering committee decides on who to award the Mohn Prize based on a recommendation from a scientific committee appointed by the steering committee.
The scientific committee has five members - all of them leading researchers in their respective field. The committee as a collective should represent a broad range of field in Arctic research. A minimum of three committee members should come from outside of Norway. In addition to evaluating candidates nominated by others, the scientific committee is free to nominate additional candidates. If needed, the scientific committee can consult with external experts when evaluating nominated candidates.
The scientific committee should, if possible, submit to the steering committee a prioritised list of three laureate candidates.
The members of the science committee are appointed for a time period covering two nomination cycles - with possible reappointment. Should a member of the scientific committee step down during his/her term, a new member will be appointed for the remainder of the term.

Revision of statutes

The statutes can be revised by the board of UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
